Hypnotherapy can be life enhancing . Hypnos was a Greek God who personified sleep. One does not sleep during a hypnotherapy session. What is involved could be described as a heightened awareness, an engagement with the subconscious mind. Our conscious mind is the seat of will, determination ,problem solving, thinking, analysing, comparing and evaluating. People need a reason for everything. On the other hand, the subconscious mind is the home of long term memory, habits, imagination ,creativity, feelings, emotions, beliefs. We operate from our conscious mind about 5 percent of the time. Our subconscious is where the other 95 percent of our method of acting in the world comes from .So it’s very easy to see who is the boss!
The hypnotherapist sends suggestions to the subconscious via a no. of means .His or her main aim is to bypass the analytical conscious mind and awaken the power of the subconscious which is as already stated, running away in the background anyway. The idea behind therapy is to harness the magical power of our deepest places in our minds and rewrite the long standing programmes which impinge on and affect our conscious mind in ways we are unaware of.
There is absolutely no need for fear during a session, which can last for about 45 minutes to an hour. The client is always in control and can return to the fully awakened state at any time.
It is important to collaborate with the therapist in order to access deeper states .Don’t forget those deeper states already exist, but they may need some fine tuning. Only when the mind is relaxed, does it and indeed the physical body set to work to accept the suggestions made to it. Usually the suggestions made are repeated gently in different ways and using slightly different phrases or words in order to anchor a new feeling, belief or idea.
Hypnotherapy can work for almost any condition ; mental, physical, emotional. It is very helpful for sates of anxiety, panic, phobias , all kinds of fears. It can also be a valuable tool for pain management, lack of confidence, low self esteem, cessation of smoking and indeed management of any long term illness .It can help to negate a frightening prognosis .We often receive subliminal messages from our healthcare practitioners in this modern world where the diagnosis may reign supreme and the physical and emotional effects of telling us what our test results show can be overlooked.
I generally customise hypnotherapy scripts for my clients, as in I write an individualised script based on what they tell me. The session is recorded and sent on afterwards. This generally works very well. Sometimes one session may suffice, but if the issue is of long standing, then I advise some more.
Hypnotherapy is an adjunct to other treatment modalities, but sometimes it can take on a whole new life of its own, generating very good results. Why not give it a try in a safe relaxed environment .
